Why Filipino men in their 50s and 60s are at greater risk of suffering from cardio vascular disease and what they can do to prevent or manage it.

According to the web search results, Filipino men in their 50s and 60s are at greater risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) because of several factors, such as:

*Ageing*. As people get older, their heart and blood vessels undergo changes that may increase the risk of CVD. A major cause of CVD is the buildup of fatty deposits (plaque) in the walls of arteries over many years.

*Hypertension*. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for CVD, as it can damage the arteries and make them more prone to plaque formation and rupture. According to the Philippine Heart Association, hypertension prevalence in the Philippines increased to 37% in 2021, signaling a “progressive rise” of high blood pressure among Filipinos². Hypertension prevalence was higher among men (52%) than women (48%).

*Diabetes*: Diabetes is a condition that affects how the body uses glucose (sugar), which is the main source of energy for the cells. People with diabetes have high levels of glucose in their blood, which can damage the blood vessels and nerves that control the heart and blood flow. Diabetes can also increase the risk of other CVD risk factors, such as obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

*
Lifestyle Choices*: Some habits and behaviors can also affect the risk of CVD for Filipino men in their 50s and 60s. These include smoking, being overweight or obese, having an unhealthy diet, being physically inactive, and drinking excessive alcohol³⁴. Smoking is one of the most preventable causes of CVD, as it damages the lining of the arteries and increases the risk of blood clots³. Being overweight or obese can raise blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and increase the workload on the heart. Having an unhealthy diet that is high in saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, and added sugars can also contribute to CVD by raising cholesterol levels and blood pressure³. Being physically inactive can weaken the heart muscle and reduce its efficiency. Drinking excessive alcohol can raise blood pressure and triglyceride levels, and cause irregular heartbeats.

To reduce the risk of CVD, Filipino men in their 50s and 60s should adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle that includes the following:

*Know your numbers*: It is recommended to have regular check-ups with the health care provider to monitor the blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and body mass index (BMI)⁴. These numbers can help assess the risk of CVD and guide the treatment and prevention strategies.

*Quit smoking*: Quitting smoking can lower the risk of CVD and improve overall health. There are many resources and programs available to help people quit smoking, such as nicotine replacement products, counseling, and support groups.

*Eat healthy*: Eating a balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and prevent or manage diabetes³. It is also advisable to limit the intake of saturated fat, trans fat, sodium and added sugars, and to choose foods that are low in these components.

*Be active*. Being physically active can strengthen the heart and blood vessels, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and help maintain a healthy weight. It is recommended to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week, or a combination of both. Aerobic activity is any exercise that makes the heart beat faster and the lungs work harder, such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming³. It is also beneficial to do muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week, such as lifting weights, doing push-ups, or using resistance bands³.

*Drink moderately*: Drinking alcohol in moderation can have some benefits for the heart, such as raising the HDL (good) cholesterol and preventing blood clots³. However, drinking too much alcohol can have harmful effects, such as raising the blood pressure and triglyceride levels, and causing irregular heartbeats³. Moderation means no more than one drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men. One drink is equivalent to 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor.

I hope this information helps you understand why Filipino men in their 50s and 60s are at greater risk of suffering from CVD and what they can do to prevent or manage it.
